Tonawanda, NY: A Town Of Hard Workers

Located north of Buffalo along the Erie Canal, Tonawanda has as rich a history as the rest of the area. The community began in the early 1800s as a hamlet, which grew slowly until the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, followed swiftly by railroads. By the end of the 19th century, both sides of the canal made up a thriving lumberyard. To this day, a huge part of Tonawanda’s identity is tied up in the canal; we celebrate an annual Canal festival, feature many businesses in the Gateway Harbor area, and have several popular historical sites devoted to Tonawanda’s lumber and canal background.
