In order to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you must meet one of the following conditions to start:
● 65 or older ● Blind ● Disabled and unable to work
If these meet these conditions, you must also:
● Have a limited income & resources ● Be a U.S. citizen (or be recognized as a “qualified alien”) ● Live in the U.S.
● Provide permission for the Social Security Administration to contact any financial institutions to inquire about your records
● Complete an application
If you have been out of the country for a full month or longer or have been in a hospital/prison at the government’s expense, you will not be eligible.
Even these basic requirements have further specifics that must be adhered to. The Social Security Administration has strict requirements that must be met in order for a person to be considered blind, disabled, or have limited income and resources. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to make a case that you or a loved one deserves SSI alone. That’s why it’s important to contact a Supplemental Security Income attorney.
