Requirements & Specifications for SSI Eligibility

In order to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you must meet one of the following conditions to start:

  • 65 or older
  • Blind
  • Disabled and unable to work

If these meet these conditions, you must also:

  • Have a limited income & resources
  • Be a U.S citizen (or be recognized as a “qualified alien”)
  • Live in the US
  • Provide permission for the Social Security Administration to contact any financial institutions to inquire about your records
  • Complete an application

If you have been out of the country for a full month or longer or have been in a hospital/prison at the government’s expense, you will not be eligible.

The Social Security Administration has strict requirements that must be met in order for a person to be considered blind, disabled, or have limited income and resources.
